<< Back to the Tutorials page How to Make Harlequin Dreads The below tutorial explains how to make harlequin dreads, which are double-ended dreads that are different colors on each side. Harlequins are excellent for disguising natural hair for extension installations because you can make one half of the dread match your hair and the other half can be any accent color you like. The tutorial uses boiling water to seal the dreads, but you can also use steam from a tea kettle or a steamer. What You will Need - Kanekalon jumbo braid - available here! - Binder clips - A comb or backcombing brush - available here! - A kettle of boiling water or a steamer - Pliers or gloves (to hold the ends of the dreads and keep from burning your fingers) Instructions 1. Section off two colors of kanekalon jumbo braid to make your dread. The amount of hair you section off will depend on how thick you want the dreads to be. Try experimenting with different amounts of hair until you find the size that you like. 2. Fold one of the colors of hair in half. Then fold the other color in half and hang it over the first fold. 3. Now you'll need to secure the middle of your dread. Wrap your dread around something secure, like the back of a chair, a towel rack, or make yourself a dreading station with a hook like we are using in the pictures. Clip the binder clip onto the hair so that it stays in place. 4. Move half of the hair out of the way and backcomb the other half. 5. Now, backcomb the second half of the dread. 6. You can use your binder clip again to keep your dreads in place while you seal them. We've got it clipped onto the top of a coat hanger in the pictures. Once your dread is secured, seal it with boiling water, a steamer, or steam from a kettle. 7. Seal the ends, and then you're done! |
